Mute Math stopped by Letterman this past Thursday evening for a performance of Backfire from their new album Armistice. We've yet to hear the new album, but we're pretty anxious. Big fans of the band's debut, as well as the Spotlight EP.
Folks always seem to find it interesting that we know a thing or two about Madonna tracks. We actually know a good deal about the old School Madonna material. The first album, definitely, stuff from the Virgin era and the two films to launch around that time (Vision Quest and Desperately Seeking Susan), yep. Anything beyond, well here and there. We love Ray Of Light and there are some great moments from Confessions.
The early 80's stuff is just so classic. Favorite track from the earlier days? Burning Up, hands down. We were obsessed with NYC as a kid and early Madonna kinda fit into the whole scene we tried to follow.
Anyway, the point of this post is to mention the upcoming Madonna greatest hits collection titled Celebration due 9/29. You've probably heard the new single of the same name. A second new track, Revolver (featuring Lil' Wayne), will also be included.
The set, which is available as a 2-disc or one disc version, does a pretty good job of covering Madonna's career from start to finish. Everyone has an opinion and of course everyone feels something was left off, or should have been left off.
We would have like to seen Gambler and Physical Attraction included. Where's Angel? Even Causing A Commotion would have been an interesting choice.
A pretty hefty DVD version is also available. Some exclusions here as well, but overall pretty thorough.

Damn it, we are still kind of mad about Gambler being left off. Check it:
The four mates from Friendly Fires paid a recent shopping trip to Amoeba. The guys were kind enough to sit down with the staff to shoot an episode of Amoeba's What's In My Bag?
You wanna know the answer? Then watch the below. We love these segments. It's always interesting to see who buys what and why:
The Cranberries will put an end to their seven year "break" and reform for an upcoming tour. All four original members will hit the road in the U.S. later this year. European dates are being routed for 2010. They also promise new materiel in the live set which will eventually lead to a new studio album.
Dolores O'Riordan had this to say on the band's official site:
"I've decided to reunite with my former band
members in The Cranberries and we will be writing new songs and
performing tracks off my new album as well as our greatest hits during
the shows. I'd love to see you out there."
Interesting how the news breaks the same day O'Riordan's second solo album, No Baggage, hits the shops. Imagine that.
It's funny that during the band's heyday we never got into them. It was only years later that we sort of connected to a few of the songs here and there. Although, Zombie was always in heavy rotation. I think we ran that import CD single into the ground.
Exact dates are expected soon.
Live version of Zombie (from Paris) recorded in 1999, below:
Speaking of covers below, we completely forgot to mention Peter Murphy's second installment in his series of "secret covers".
He first tackled John Lennon'sInstant Karma, which we reported on here.
He then unleashed a very, well, Peter Murphy version of David Bowie's Space Oddity. Listen below.
Next up, a live take on the Joy Division classic Transmission. The recording was taken from Murphy's NYC show at the Highline Ballroom last month. Instant Karma and Space Oddity are available now on iTunes, Transmission will be for sale shortly. No physical releases are planned at this time.
We are big, freaky fans for covers so keep em' coming.
The nice thing about music is that there's always something to discover, old or new. We caught the Brookville set a few week's back when they opened for Trachcan Sinatras at the Troubadour, and we were pretty impressed. Never heard of them, but we of course knew of Andy Chase (from Ivy and Paco) and Brookville just happens to be one of his many projects.
Anyway, the point of this post is to shed some light on Brookville's stellar take on The The'sSlow Emotion Replay. Great live, and just as great recorded. The track appears on Brookville's second album, Life In The Shade. A softer take on the original.
Chase will release the third Brookville album, Broken Lights, on September 29th.
Listen below, and man, this really makes us yearn for some classic Matt Johnson:
The Bravery step outside of the abandoned church they've been recording/living in for a North American tour kicking off in Las Vegas on September 18th. The guys play The Wiltern here in LA on November 5th and The Warfield in SF on the 6th. The Bravery's third studio album is due in November.

Freaking fantastic shot of Dave Gahan now appearing on the official Depeche Mode site.
Photography in general, but especially in music, is another of our great passions. This would make a nice addition to our expanding collection of music-based photos for our future "music room".
The music obsessed folks behind The Red Radio spend every waking hour with music.
24 hours a day consumed by listening, spinning, record shopping, iPod organizing and venue hopping around Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Drop us a line and say hello.
